"I don't want to die here.. Are you going to break your promise like he did?"
Zale says with resolve, "I don't know what he promised you, but as long as I have air in my lungs and blood in my veins, I won't break a vow I've made. I refuse to roll over like a dog and let them put me under until I've seen to my word carried out." He pauses a moment, holding out his hand. "And I promise you now, you will not die here. You've my word as long as I breathe."

Eyes flicking up to his face slowly at his words, life flickers in the back of her gaze before she reaches out, hand grasping his loosely, three fingers intertwined oddly with his "Then let's hurry, please...

"Then let's hurry, please...
With a nod and a reassuring squeeze of his hand, Zale faces forward and starts in a slow trot, glancing back over his shoulder now and then as the chaos he heard in the library grows quiet. "We'll be heading west," he explains. "My brother is at a military camp there for refugees, though he's known to leave and move around. That's the place we'll start towards first, and from there we'll try to figure out who else is out there."

"A military camp?" Rowan echoes quietly, eyes wavering as she follows him along, gaze flicking to his gloves, remembering the mark before his words register "There are others like us?..."

"A military camp? There are others like us?..."
"As far as I know," he answers, releasing her hand long enough to peer over the edge of the building, finding an easy path down. He gestures for her to follow as he jumps down on a dumpster, gaze flicking around. "Legends say that there's four horseman of the apocalypse-- pestilence, famine, war, and death. There's also a rumor about a fifth one, providence, but nothing is known about it. From what Nan had told me, each horseman rose to conquer this world, though it was in the form of their aspects in the beginning, then it was the demons, poltergeists, and creatures of the night. In order for them to finish what they started, they needed a body, or a host, so each one sought one out. But, because of how volatile a human heart is," he pauses and turns, offering a helping hand, "they split themselves into two hosts. One that they know they can control, but isn't as strong as the original host. But, if the original host chooses humanity over chaos, then the second host is to fight for dominance. Now, as for people like me, those who act as guides, I'm not sure how we came to be."
He pauses again, and thought crossing his mind. "Maybe we were something of Providence's creation, to help humanity have a fighting chance by guiding you away from chaos."

Jumping down after him, Rowan ignores his hand and walks past him a few steps, stopping at his words, gaze trained straight ahead, arms wrapping around herself "And we're pestilence, according to you." she murmurs, quiet "And if the original host falls into chaos, what happens to the guide? Do they follow them into the darkness?"

As his hand is ignored, he pursed his lips then runs it through his hair, turning to face her. "I don't know. I could, or I'll be left to try to fight with humanity anyway."

"I don't know. I could, or I'll be left to try to fight with humanity anyway."
"And you would choose humanity?" Rowan murmurs quietly, hand reaching out to grasp his again, eyes trained on the ground between them

"And you would choose humanity?"
"If it meant saving others from what I've seen, what we've seen, yes, I would choose humanity," Zale says quietly, taking her hand again and starts walking slowly, a little more comfortable now that they are off the roof.

"That's good, that you would leave me behind." Rowan whispers quietly, voice slipping as she follows him, tears pricking the corners of her eyes again without her realizing, tone dull "Because I don't know if I can fight the darkness forever, it hurts too."

"If I had a choice, I wouldn't abandon you," Zale answers simply, eyes remaining forward.

"If I had a choice, I wouldn't abandon you,"
"Why?" Rowan asks, voice cracking as she closes her eyes, letting him lead her "One person is not a choice if the world is at stake."

"Why? One person is not a choice if the world is at stake."
"You never know what that one person could mean." Zale responds lightly.

"And just what is it I mean to you?" Rowan asks, gently pulling him to a stop

Feeling a tug again, Zale slows and glances at her from the corner of his eye, grey soft but guarded. "Renewed hope," he replies simply.
